Convert Images on Your Phone — No App Download Required
Apple's HEIC format saves space but causes headaches when you need to share with Android users, send to a client, or upload to a website that doesn't support it. Until recently, the only solution was downloading a dedicated app.
That's no longer necessary.
The Problem with Phone Image Conversion Apps
Every "image converter" app in the App Store or Play Store works the same way:
- You upload your photo to their server
- They convert it
- You download it back
Problems with this approach:
- Your photos go through someone else's server
- Upload/download takes time, especially on mobile networks
- Many apps have file size limits
- Most require a subscription for "full features"
- Battery drain from upload/download process
Server-Side Conversion (Better)
Server-side conversion keeps your photos off your phone during processing, so battery drain is minimal. But you still need to upload the file, wait for processing, and download it back.
Some people have privacy concerns about uploading photos to convert. That's fair.
The Best Approach: Browser-Based Local Processing
ImageConvert processes images directly in your browser on your device. No upload to a server, no download back. The conversion happens locally.
Here's how it works:
- You open the converter in Safari or Chrome
- You select or drag your photo
- The browser converts it using JavaScript
- You download the result
The catch: For very large files, local processing can be slow on older phones. And some formats (PSD, HEIC) require server-side processing since browsers can't handle them natively.
What Works on Phone Browsers
| Format | Works in browser |
|---|---|
| JPG | ✅ Yes |
| PNG | ✅ Yes |
| WEBP | ✅ Yes |
| HEIC | ⚠️ Requires server |
| PSD | ⚠️ Requires server |
For HEIC and PSD, we use server-side conversion — but your file is processed once and deleted immediately. No storage, no reuse, no third-party access.
How to Convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone
- Open ImageConvert in Safari
- Tap the upload button
- Select your HEIC photo
- Choose JPG as output
- Tap Convert & Download
The converted file appears in your Downloads folder (or Files app, depending on your iOS version).
Browser Tips for Mobile
- Safari on iOS: Use the share menu to send photos directly to the converter
- Chrome on Android: Long-press an image to convert it
- Use WiFi for large files — the upload goes faster and uses less mobile data
When You Might Still Want an App
Browser-based tools are great for one-off conversions. If you're converting hundreds of images daily, a dedicated app with batch processing might be faster. But for 90% of users converting photos occasionally, the browser is all you need.
